The Herringbone pattern in wood flooring is beginning to make a comeback in homes across the US. It is a timeless zigzag pattern that adds sophistication and elegance to floor. It's great at hiding dirt and scratches since no plank runs straight. Scratches blend into the zig-zag better than straight planks. Visually, it makes small rooms feel bigger. Diagonal lines trick the eye into length which can help smaller homes. Many herringbone colors offer warm tones like chestnut or honey oak, so it's trending hard right now. For resale value, real estate agents swear buyers pay extra for that custom, hand-laid feel.
There are a number of pre-finished wood flooring options and luxury vinyl options that will give you herringbone size planks. For luxury vinyl, we have Stanton, Mohawk, and Canopy. There are a number of glue down vinyl planks as well that have thicker options and thinner less expensive options to use in homes or offices in other brands.
With those size planks, you can also do a couple of other patterns if you desire to mix them in the home. There are also straight planks of the same color so you can do a single room or area in herringbone and the rest the straight plank. It gives you more design options for your home.
With a herringbone, you will have to start in the middle of the room. Use a chalk line and snap your lines in a perfect 90 degree angle to keep the pattern even through the room. Starting on the wrong point may cause one side to have smaller cuts than the other side. You will also have to figure more material in for cuts because you are cutting more angles in the pattern along the wall. You will need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the installation depending on what product you use.
